A 5-year-old boy was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a recent operation in Minnesota, sparking significant concern among school officials and the community. The child, identified as preschooler Liam Ramos, was with his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias (also known as Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias), when agents approached them on their driveway. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later stated on X that ICE's operation was not targeting the child but was focused on apprehending his father, whom they described as an "illegal alien" who "abandoned" his son when confronted by agents.
But here's where it gets controversial... Zena Stenvik, the superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools, voiced her disbelief and concern, questioning the necessity of detaining a 5-year-old. She powerfully argued, "You can't tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal." Images shared by the school district, described as "bystander photos" taken by "known and confirmed community members," show a young boy, believed to be Liam, wearing a distinctive bunny-shaped winter hat, standing outside while an officer holds his backpack.
Marc Prokosch, legal counsel for the family, indicated that Liam and his father were likely being held at a detention facility in Texas. School officials also clarified that the father had an active asylum case and was not under a deportation order at the time.
Superintendent Stenvik explained during a press conference that Liam had just returned home from preschool when the apprehension occurred. School officials were present at the Ramos residence to offer support around the time of the incident. This situation is particularly alarming as Stenvik revealed that ICE had recently detained four students within her school district, including a 10-year-old and two 17-year-olds.
While the DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the BBC, their statement on X described the arrest as a "targeted operation." They further elaborated, "For the child's safety, one of our ICE officers remained with the child while the other officers apprehended Conejo Arias." The DHS also stated, "Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children, or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates. Their families should not be afraid to drop off or pick up their children from school."
