A New Era of American Scoring Records?
Detroit Red Wings forward, Patrick Kane, is on the verge of an incredible milestone. With just two points to go, he's about to surpass Mike Modano, a Hockey Hall of Famer, as the highest-scoring U.S. player in the NHL. But here's where it gets controversial...
Kane predicts that Auston Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs captain, is the next big thing. He believes Matthews will follow in his footsteps and set new records.
"Special player, that Matthews," Kane said. "One day, he'll be right where I am now."
Matthews, with his 25 goals leading the Leafs, is certainly making waves. His 10 goals in January alone put him at the top of the NHL.
"He's the guy American kids look up to," Kane added. "A true talent in a big market, scoring goals like no other."
But Matthews' path to breaking records isn't without challenges. Health has been a concern, with the forward playing a full season only once in his career.
And this is the part most people miss...
Matthews grew up idolizing Kane. He even skated with him at Darryl Belfry's skills camp after winning the Calder Trophy. Matthews was in awe of Kane's work ethic.
"He works harder than you'd think for someone with his talent," Matthews said. "It was eye-opening to see him push himself so hard."
Now, nine years later, Kane is on the brink of history. He feels great, both physically and in his game.
"As an offensive player, I always strive for more," he said. "And there's definitely more to come."
So, will Matthews live up to Kane's prediction? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the future of American scoring records in the NHL is an exciting prospect.
